Safety information
Your safety is our highest priority. Before every tour, our crew provides a full safety briefing to ensure everyone enjoys a safe and memorable whale watching experience.
Flotation Suits & Life Jackets
The flotation suit provided is not just for warmth—it is an essential piece of safety equipment. Worn together with your life jacket, it provides additional buoyancy and helps keep you afloat in the unlikely event of entering the water. The suit is not enough to keep you warm alone and you should wear all your winter layers underneath.
Our life jackets are designed to inflate automatically when they come into contact with water. Their primary purpose is to keep your head above the surface in an emergency situation. It is extremely unlikley but if you were ever to end up in the water, remain calm, lie on your back, and allow the life jacket to do its job.
If, for any reason, the life jacket does not inflate automatically, it can be activated manually by pulling the red handle located on the right-hand side. Each life jacket is also equipped with a whistle to help attract attention in an emergency.
While the Boat is Underway
Sea conditions can change, and we may encounter waves. For your comfort and safety:
- Remain seated unless instructed otherwise by the crew.
- Hold onto the grab handle in front of you at all times.
- When travelling through rougher water, bend your knees or stand slightly with your weight supported by your legs. This helps absorb impacts and reduces strain on your back. We say – ‘Ride your seat like a horse!’
- Keep your hands, arms, feet, and personal belongings inside the boat at all times.
If You Need Assistance
If you experience any discomfort, feel seasick, have a question, or require assistance during the tour, simply raise your hand and keep it raised until a member of our crew comes to you. Please alert us if you experience any issue – it is best to let us know as early as possible.
Around the Whales
Our experienced skippers follow responsible wildlife-watching guidelines to minimise disturbance to the animals. Once we reach the whales, we ask all passengers to:
- Remain seated unless stationary or instructed otherwise.
- Avoid leaning over the side of the boat.
- Follow all instructions from the skipper and crew.
- Keep noise to a minimum so everyone can enjoy the encounter while respecting the wildlife.
Good Whale Watching Etiquette
We want everyone on board to have the best possible view of the whales. To help make this fair for everyone, we ask passengers to work together to follow a few simple guidelines:
- If the whales are on the right-hand side of the boat, passengers on the right should remain seated, while passengers on the left may stand to watch.
- If the whales move to the left-hand side, we’ll simply swap over—those on the left remain seated while those on the right stand.
- Please follow any instructions from the skipper or crew, as they may ask you to change or remain seated depending on the situation.
- Be mindful of those around you and avoid blocking another guest’s view for extended periods.
- Please keep noise to a minimum when we are close to the whales, allowing everyone to enjoy the experience while respecting the animals.
A little consideration goes a long way and helps ensure every passenger gets an excellent view.
Enjoy Your Adventure
Our crew is trained to ensure your tour is both safe and enjoyable. If you have any questions before departure, please don’t hesitate to ask. We will conduct a safety briefing prior to departure to highlight these points and we ask that everyone signs a participation form on arrival.
